You act like a 2% repsonse rate is a bad thing! There's more than 2000 companies in the Hollywood Creative Cirectory. You're 2% is about the response rate I get, sometimes a little higher. But with over 2000 companies listed that means you'll get 40 places to read your script. And if you do this a couple times per year that's almost 100 submissions per year. I've actually optioned scripts this way. You can also use email now (so no postage costs) or use a fax blasting service like FlatRateFax.com - it's like 5 cents per letter sent. I typically put two synopses in my query letter which seems to boost the 2% repsonse rate up a bit since one of the two scripts is bound to get some interest.

I've worked in marketing so I guess a 2% response rate wasn't something that discouraged me.

Damn, I'm graduating MFA this month and it's a bit disappointing to hear your comment J. To Kem, you probably have found the answer to your question by now, but if you haven't I'd put your sound effects in the "action" paragraphs of the script.

For example:

INT. Anderson's Family Home -- Day

Muted howling, blustery wind and intermittent thunder is heard outside. Anderson (24) stands by the window looking out.

Etc.

So I'm writing a screenplay. I want to add sound effects. For instance: MUTED HOWLING BLUSTERY WIND and INTERMITTENT THUNDER. How do I format (ON SCREEN) and (OFF SCREEN) as follows?

Note: My goal is that wind and thunder is heard coming from outside, by characters in the Anderson Family Home.

INT. ANDERSON FAMILY HOME - DAY

MUTED HOWLING BLUSTERY WIND and INTERMITTENT THUNDER. (OFF SCREEN)
or
MUTED HOWLING BLUSTERY WIND and INTERMITTENT THUNDER. (ON SCREEN)

S.O.S. as soon is as humanely possible?

Respectfully,
Kem
