Like everyone else on the planet, I saw Star Trek and really dug it. It occurs to me that making any Star Trek movie has its perils — legendary directors as well as actors associated with the franchise from its inception have turned out some of the worst of them. On some level, it’s easy to take for granted just how good the new Star Trek is. Perhaps if we take a moment to contemplate ways in which they could have ruined the new Star Trek movie, we’ll appreciate it even more…
How they could have ruined the new Star Trek movie (spoilery)
- Make Kirk cocky, smarmy, and all around just an unlikable guy.
- Be very inconsistent with tone — nearly slapstick comedy one minute, heart-wrenching drama the next
- Never explain how two major characters happen to find each other in a highly unlikely place in the middle of the movie
- Introduce a love triangle that goes nowhere
- Let the interpersonal conflict between characters overshadow the Villain and his Evil Plan
- For that matter, seriously limit the onscreen time of your antagonist — who needs the Joker?
- Skip the final climactic space battle between the Enterprise and the Villain’s starship
What’s that? Oh.
Damn, where did they go right!?
