Your desktop, that is.
I find that writers, especially budding ones, have a (somewhat useless) fixation on other writers’ work spaces. Heck, they run a whole photo-series about writers’ rooms over at The Guardian.
What I’m interested in seeing here is your virtual workspace. Here’s what you do:
- Fire up your word processor — whatever you use to write with on your computer. Go to wherever you are currently editing in the document and leave it there.
- Take a screencap of your desktop. Leave it the way you would normally see it when you are working[1].
- Post your screencap to your blog or a photo hosting service like Flickr or Picasa or one of the many other image sharing sites out there.
- Post a link (cut and paste from your address bar) in the comments below[2].
To start things off, here’s my own desktop, as it looks when I’m working. (Click to embiggen)
My stage play is in the Final Draft window. I have a desktop Twitter client running constantly on the side for emergency procrastination purposes.
Okay, time to show us your own digital workspace in the comments below.
- If you use a recent version of Windows, you have a screen capture utility on hand already — look for or search for “Snipping Tool” in your start menu. Mac users…you’re on your own. [↩]
- If you want to get fancy, you can post the image with regular old HTML in the comment space, but it will be rendered small to fit within the column. [↩]

Well, for Mac, you have to look for or search for– no wait, you don't. Shift-Command-3. You're done.
Just extracting the Michael, as it were.

I see you went above and beyond the call of duty, there. Well done.
