Somewhat uninvolving and bland, but I can imagine it would make for a passable read for a few magic-loving gradeschoolers. An obvious influence on the Harry Potter books, this one definitely skews younger.
My main problem with this book is common to far too much of children’s literature. Heck, Curious George built an empire on it. The problem is this: the main character gets into loads of trouble, usually of her own doing, and is redeemed when she she accidentally stumbles across a chance to do an unrelated good deed.
Like that makes up for it.
Instead of facing down her real problems, little clumsy witch Mildred gets to save the day because she happen to be in the right place at the right time. And then…suddenly all is forgiven.
Not a very satisfying resolution, and not the sort of lesson I would want to champion to children.
